Abstract

BUSTOS, R.; HERRERA R., A.; TSUNESADA, Y.  and  POMA, J.. EMPIRICAL FUNCTION OF THE LATERAL MUONIC DISTRIBUTION. Revista Boliviana de Física [online]. 2011, vol.18, n.18, pp.7-16. ISSN 1562-3823.

We have studied the muon component of the Extensive Air Showers (EAS) falling between the ranges of 1014 and 1016 eV according to data from BASJE (Bolivian Air Shower Joint Experiment) arrangement at Mt. Chacaltaya, Bolivia. By analyzing data from this component we achieved a muon lateral distribution function and its dependence on the ranges of energy of this arrangement. AIRES simulations and QGSJET01c model have been used to compare our results, finding interesting coincidences as well as discrepancies. The simulation with CORSIKA and PLOTHS2 model was used only to illustrate the qualitative behavior of the cumulative shower muon toward the center of its axis. The results of the Tien-Shan experiment corroborated those found with the BASJE experiment; thus, the muon lateral distribution function of BASJE becomes a good candidate to study the cosmos through the EAS detected at Chacaltaya Observatory. Finally, a quick application with the empirical function obtained was made.

Keywords : extensive air shower; cosmic rays.
