Abstract
VELARDE, A. et al. LARGE APERTURE GAMMA RAY OBSERVATORY THE LAGO PROJECT IN BOLIVIA. Revista Boliviana de Física [online]. 2009, vol.15, n.15, pp.32-38. ISSN 1562-3823.
LAGO is a network of water Cherenkov detectors (WCD) which operate which detect secondary particles that are remnants of small atmospheric showers (storms) produced by gammas originating from GRBs. LAGO is made up of high altitude sites: Sierra La Negra (4,650 m asl.) in Puebla-Mexico, Chacaltaya (5,230 m asl.), in La Paz-Bolivia, Pico Espejo (4,765 m asl.) in Mérida-Venezuela. They also make up part of a the 16.000m2 AUGER Cherenkov detector network in Malarge-Argentina (1,400 m asl). In Peru a number of possible high altitude sites close to Cusco are being identified for the installation of a LAGO network. There is even a proposal to install detectors in Everests CNR Pyramid at (5,050 m asl). We present the results from the installation and operation of Bolivias LAGO station in the Cosmic Physics Laboratory at Chacaltaya.
