Abstract

GHEZZI, F.; GRIEVE, R.; SANJINES, D.  and  ZHENG, X. H.. MODELO DE INTERACCIONES ELÉCTRICAS EN UN SISTEMA CONFINADO DE ESFERAS CARGADAS. Revista Boliviana de Física [online]. 2008, vol.14, n.14, pp.50-57. ISSN 1562-3823.

We report the experimental results of a system of several milimeter-size metallic spheres lying over the lower plate of a parallel plate square capacitor; the spheres are laterally confined by a square metallic electrically charged boundary which prevents the spheres from being dispersed in 2D. The large and growing evidence of experimental data of condensed phases in 2D still lacks a definitive theoretical model that permits the interpretation of such data (for example the process of melting in 2D). In this work we have developed a validation system to establish the interactions among the spheres and the confining boundary. The research involved the experimental set up, its calibration and data gathering. We show that the Coulombian interactions model is reasonable for interpreting the experimental data in this work, although a dipole interaction is also possible due to the formation of image charges on the capacitor plates.

Keywords : boundary value problems in electrostatics; phase transitions; computational techniques.
