Introduction: the obesity and its consequences have been increasing in all age groups and regions of the word. Objectives: to known the prevalence of childhood obesity in Bolivia according to WHO standards. Design: descriptive study. Methods: we studied the result of five demographic studies done in Bolivia in the last 19 years apply the cutoffs determined by WHO for overweight and obesity in children under five with the new standards. Result: from 1989 to 2008 the trend of overweight and obesity has changed little, remaining between 7.2% and 8.1% in children between 3 and 35 months. The prevalence of obesity among children under five years for 2008 was 1.8% and 6.7% for overweight. Conclusions: our data confirms the existence of childhood overweight and obesity in Bolivia with a small upward trend, so prevention efforts should be made to avoid a further increase in this prevalence.
