Abstract
ESCOBAR MENDOZA, Edil; SCHMIDT VACAFLORES, Gastón and SARDINAS CASTELLON, Susan. Electroencephalogram abnormalities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Rev. bol. ped. [online]. 2011, vol.50, n.1, pp.3-6. ISSN 1024-0675.
Attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity are pathologies that have impacted the world almost 20 years ago. Diagnosis is still clinical, since there are no biological, physiological or image tests that may confirm the diagnosis. An electroencephalogram is a test that is often used in these case but the results are not definitive because almost 80% of the studies are normal and the rest abnormal. We found that close to half of the Electroencephalograms showed an abnormal pattern, among which was epileptiform or irritative activity, therefore the benefit of an electroencephalogram does not lie in confirming the diagnosis but in ruling out other associated pathologies sharing certain characteristics.
Keywords : electroencephalogram; attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity.
