Abstract

Objetive: to analyse diagnostic assessment and treatment applied to pediatric patients with goiter of Hashimoto´s thyroiditis. Materials and methods: prospective and descriptive work. There were studied patients under 15 years old which have been seen at the pediatric endocrinology room of “Hospital Santa Cruz”, with diagnosis of goiter, during a period of three years. Researched variables: Age, sex, familiar antecedents of thyroidopathy, goiter degree, thyroid ultrasonographic discovery, plasmatic level of TSH, T4L, T3, T4 and anti TPO. Excluded patients: who didn’t fulfill lab the clinical and laboratorial follow-up. Results: 86 patients with goiter were attended. 67 were studied (19 were excluded). The 91% of the patients were 12 to 14 years old; the 76% were female sex and the 87%were euthyroid; it began a therapy with levotiroxin to the hypothyroid patients in 13%. Hashimoto´s thyroiditis was diagnosed on the 36% of the patients (with antibody anti TPO positive, as well as typical ultrasonographic discoveries of the disease). Conclusions: the Hashimoto´s thyroiditis is a frequent cause of goiter in pediatric patients; generally affects puberty, euthyroid and female sex.
