Abstract

CUELLAR NAVARRO, Gustavo et al. Effect of complementary feeding and micronutrients in nutritional status of children. Rev. bol. ped. [online]. 2006, vol.45, n.1, pp.11-17. ISSN 1024-0675.

Objectives: to find out the effect of complementary feeding and micronutrients in nursing babies and children. Design: longitudinal, co-relational and descriptive study. Place: eight urban and suburban areas of the city of La Paz. Material and methods: no probabilistic sampling according to inclusion and exclusion criteria of 305 children with a 0.95 level of significance. The variables considered were modification of the anthropometric indexes (Z weight/height, Z height/age, Z weight/age). The information was analyzed in a data base. The descriptive analysis was done by media analysis and standard deviation, for the different variables, number of patients and percentage. Results: Malnutrition showed a slight improvement, however acute and chronic malnutrition showed a more important improvement. Chronic malnutrition was more common in girls and the other forms of malnutrition were more common in males. In the group between -1 DS and -3 DS, short stature for age was more common in children between 3 and 12 years of age and high risk for chronic malnutrition was more common in older breast-fed babies. In the 6 to 12 years of age group the BMI was similar for normal and underweight children (44.5% vs. 49%), only 4% were overweight and 2, 3% obese. Conclusions: at the end of the study, there was a slight improvement of global malnutrition (45% to 52%), and best results appeared in the acute and chronic malnutrition patients. Girls were more prone to chronic malnutrition. It is of the outmost importance to constantly educate families on the benefits of good nutrition.

Keywords : malnutrition; micronutrients; nutrition.
