Resumen

RAMIREZ RODRIGUEZ, Nelson et al. Herbal poisoning with possible association with Reye syndrome. Rev. bol. ped. [online]. 2004, vol.43, n.2, pp.86-88. ISSN 1024-0675.

This is a seven-month-old baby boy admitted to the Children's Hospital in La Paz due to dehydration, metabolic acidosis and acute diarrhea. He was given a homemade infusion of several herbs meant to cure him. He developed encephalopathy, liver disease and convulsions. The alanine aminotransferase raised to three times from the normal level, ammonia raised twice the normal level. The brain tomography showed cerebral edema; liver biopsy showed findings compatible with Reye syndrome. The patient evolved favorably, though slowly by means of anti-cerebral edema therapy, intravenous fluids and nutritional support for a liver failure. Final diagnosis was Reye syndrome probably caused by herbal poisoning.

Palabras clave : hepatic encephalopathy; Reye Syndrome; herbal poisoning.
