Abstract

MAZZI GONZALES DE PRADA, Eduardo et al. Experience with the implementation of the AIEPI strategy in the University of La Paz. Rev. bol. ped. [online]. 2002, vol.41, n.1, pp.3-6. ISSN 1024-0675.

This a descripton of the experience with the IMCI strategy implemented at fifth year medical students of UMSA in 2001 while they were in their Pediatrics rotation. They were trained five mornings a week by Pediatrics professors and supervised by the chief of the Pediatrics Department. Patients included those of the outpatient clinic as well as those in the different floors of each hospital. All participants were handed a copy of the “Procedure Chart”, as well as photostatic copies of exercises, registration forms and selected readings from IMCI training chapters Results obtained by 276 students with children over two months old and by 265 students with children under two months of age were tested individually. The degree of form filling for each patient was taken into consideration. Over all IMCI application at senior level students was successful and widely accepted by both teachers and students. We saw that the greatest difficulty lies in assessing malnutrition and anaemia, nutrition or low weight as well as those listed under “other problems”. Results are indeed flattering which prompt us to continue implementing the program at this level.

Keywords : IMCI; university; diseases of children.
