Abstract

ORELLANA-CENTENO, José Eduardo; GUERRERO-SOTELO, Roxana Nayeli; ORELLANA-CENTENO, Mauricio  and  MORALES-CASTILLO, Verónica. Explorative systematic review: Usefulness of probiotics in preventive pediatric dentistry. Gac Med Bol [online]. 2025, vol.48, n.2, pp.190-197.  Epub Dec 31, 2025. ISSN 1012-2966.  https://doi.org/10.47993/gmb.v48i2.1012.

Some strains of lactobacilli are suggested as part of "good clinical practice” for caries management and as a preventive method for childhood caries, gingivitis and periodontal disease, candidiasis and halitosis.

Objective:

to systematize existing information related to terms: probiotics, pediatric and preventive dentistry.

Material and methods:

the search was perfomed in PubMed-Med, NCBI and Scopus. The process was carried out in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. To reduce the possibility of bias, the CASPe template was used for systematic review analysis. The information was then collected using the SPIDER method.

Results:

ten manuscripts met the inclusion criteria. These were randomized controlled clinical trial articles (RTC) of which experimental groups, control groups, treatment (probiotic), follow-up time are described. The administration of probiotics in different foods or supplements are useful for the oral health of children's patients mainly in a preventive way, although their use in the treatment and postoperative clinical oral care is undoubted.

Conclusion:

probiotics are a useful complement in preventive dentistry, therefore more studies are required to confirm these findings and to clarify the possible dose-response relationship in order to obtain adequate results, as well as to review the economic issue in health that seem justified.

Keywords : dentistry; pediatric dentistry; preventive dentistry; probiotic; public health.
