Abstract

Objective:

to detect pathogens responsible for sexually transmitted infections in women attending the Research, Education and Services Center, using multiplex real-time PCR and to identify possible sociodemographic, behavioral, and patient-related risk factors.

Methods:

an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted in 100 women with clinical symptoms of STIs. Pathogens responsible for STIs were detected using multiplex real-time PCR in genital swab samples. Possible risk factors were collected through individual interviews using an anonymous questionnaire.

Results:

at least one pathogen responsible for STIs was detected in 48% of the samples analyzed: T. pallidum (25%), HSV-2 (24%), HSV-1 (23%), CMV (14%), and C. trachomatis (2%). Risk factors included lack of knowledge about STIs (37%), initiation of sexual activity before age 17 (31%), number of sexual partners (52%), and sexual intercourse without a condom (71%). Significant associations were found between certain risk factors and the presence of STIs, such as age at initiation of sexual activity and number of sexual partners.

Conclusions:

a high prevalence of pathogens responsible for STIs was detected in women with clinical symptoms, highlighting the importance of molecular diagnosis for early and accurate detection.
