Abstract
OROZCO CRESPO, Julio Cesar et al. Usefulness of acute inflammatory markers in emergencies of a public hospital. Gac Med Bol [online]. 2025, vol.48, n.2, pp.27-33. Epub Dec 31, 2025. ISSN 1012-2966. https://doi.org/10.47993/gmb.v48i2.1052.
Objective:
to evaluate the usefulness of C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in the medical- surgical emergency department of the "Dr. Benigno Sanchez" hospital.
Methods:
it is an exploratory, descriptive, analytical-type investigation, subtype cases and controls, with a universe of N= 15931, obtaining a analysis unit of N=1345 for the case group and 14586 for the control group, determining a sample of 299 for the case group and a sample of 374 for the control group, through simple random sampling.
Results:
in general, both inflammatory response biomarkers are elevated in acute inflammatory processes (60% and 70% respectively), considering risk factors such as pregnancy (28%) and diabetes (10%), with the most affected systems being the genitourinary system (43%) and the gastrointestinal system (27%). However, in individuals over 50 years old (33% of the total), these values increase, suggesting lesions in the cardiopulmonary, vascular, and genitourinary systems.
Conclusions:
the results provide guidelines for emergency services to explore with greater relevance and identify the etiological focus in the most affected systems according to our research.
