Objective:

to explore the experiences of older adults in their process of adaptation to institutionalization.

Methods:

qualitative study with descriptive case study design based on the concepts of Roy's Adaptation Model. Three older adults participated by convenience sampling. Data collection was carried out by means of a semi- structured interview, content analysis was performed taking into account Mayan's proposal, starting with open coding, then axial coding and ending with selective coding. The study followed ethical guidelines and norms, preserving dignity and with informed consent.

Results:

a central category called "Experiences of adaptation to institutionalization" was obtained, and, four subcategories: Experiences of support; Adjustments and challenges; Walking an unknown path; Opportunity to grow.

Conclusions:

The adaptation of the institutionalized older adult has revealed a number of significant findings that shed light on this complex and multifaceted process. The adjustment of the institutionalized older adult is a broad process that is influenced by an interaction of social, emotional, environmental and personal factors.
