Resumen

ZAMBRANA VERA, Angela; LUIZAGA LOPEZ, Marcela  y  ILLANES VELARDE, Daniel. Reference values of the Handgrip strength in Cochabamba Bolivia: Population study. Gac Med Bol [online]. 2025, vol.48, n.1, pp.25-31.  Epub 30-Jun-2025. ISSN 1012-2966.  https://doi.org/10.47993/gmb.v48i1.858.

Objective:

The aim was to establish reference values and variability of grip strength in men and women aged 20 to 60 in Cochabamba. This was achieved through dynamometric measurements, with the purpose of recording normal grip strength in adults.

Methodology:

A cross-sectional study was conducted with a randomly selected sample using geospatial sampling. Data collection involved surveys, basic anthropometric evaluations, and grip strength measurements using a Jamar hydraulic dynamometer. A pilot test was carried out in district 9 of the Cercado municipality. Data were analyzed using STATAv. 14.

Outcome:

A total of 353 individuals participated (203 women and 150 men) with an average age of 43 years (± 18 years). The average grip strength of the dominant hand was 23,4 kg (± 4,66) for women and 33,6 kg (± 7,2) for men.

Conclusions:

Reference values and variability of HGS according to age and sex were established, which will be useful for research in body composition and clinical nutritional treatment.
