Cancer and depression are prevalent diseases, with a growing incidence in recent years; the association between depression and the clinical course of oncological disease in children and adolescents is a challenge; since the discovery of this disease influences performance, abandonment, failure and relapse to treatment.
Material and methods:
Analytical and longitudinal study, applied at the time of diagnosis and at the current age in children between seven to ten and eight years old; the Beck index was used to assess the state of depression and the modified Graffar scale for the family socioeconomic level.
Results:
Fifty-four patients were included in the study; the current median age was twelve years, more than 39 % come from Cercado; lymphoblastic leukemia occurred in 57 %; the stage of the disease is related to the level of depression, which is moderate in relapse and minimal in the surveillance stage; a relationship was identified between the level of depression with the perception of depression, the stage of the disease and the use of surgical therapy (p<0,05); Through an analysis for the 3 variables, it is related to the level of depression and is mainly moderate (Cramer's V: 0,6).
Conclusion:
Patients present depression in mild to moderate degrees, highlighting a causal relationship between separation anxiety and the degree of depression, as well as with the surgical procedure and the stage of the disease.
