Abstract

FERRUFINO IRIARTE, Javier; LOPEZ OVANDO, Nicol  and  GIL OPORTO, Bernardo. Giant Unilateral Hydronephrosis in Adult. Gac Med Bol [online]. 2021, vol.44, n.2, pp.244-248. ISSN 1012-2966.  https://doi.org/10.47993/gmb.v44i2.237.

Giant hydronephrosis is a urological entity defined by the presence of more than 1,000 ml of fluid in the renal collecting system or a kidney that represents more than 1.6% of body weight. The most common cause is obstruction of the ureteropelvic junction, being an uncommon presentation in adults and can lead to long-term complications such as hypertension, kidney rupture, renal failure and malignant changes. Nephrectomy is the treatment of choice. We present the case of a 21-year-old patient who underwent a right transperitoneal laparoscopic transperitoneal nephrectomy obtaining a kidney with approximately 2600 ml of sui generis urine. The reason for reporting this case is that this is a pathology rarely described in the literature, with a limited number of cases in adults, and to demonstrate the possibility of a laparoscopic approach.

Keywords : hydronephrosis; urology; nephrectomy; laparoscopy; ureteropyelic.
