Abstract

ABANTO SUGARAY, Liliana Liliveth; VINCES LLONTOP, Marilyn Lisbeth  and  GALVEZ DIAZ, Norma del Carmen. Mothers’ knowledge about the home care of the preterm newborn in Lambayeque - Perú 2016. Gac Med Bol [online]. 2017, vol.40, n.2, pp.27-30. ISSN 1012-2966.

After birth, preterm infants are taken to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. There they are placed in incubators, designed to keep them warm because at birth they are exposed to external environmental factors, and their own physiological processes that put thermal stability at risk1. Current scientific evidence shows that preterm and low birth weight babies have a better outcome if their parents are integrated into their care. Objetive: to determine the mothers’ level of knowledge about the home care of preterm newborns treated at the Regional Hospital Lambayeque - 2016. Methods: it is a quantitative research and descriptive cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of 93 mothers of preterm infants treated at the Lambayeque Regional Hospital from January to October 2016. The “Pre-term newborn care” Questionnaire was used as an instrument to measure the knowledge related to Exclusive breastfeeding, hygiene, care of the umbilical cord, clothing, affective bond and alarm signs. Results: the investigation concluded that the highest percentage of mothers attended at the Regional Hospital Lambayeque - 2016 present a regular knowledge about home care of the preterm newborn. Conclusions: in general terms the important level of regular knowledge that the mothers have with regard to the care of the RNPT is worrying because if the management of taken care of health and of particularly of infirmary they are not mobilized it puts in risk on the life of this defenseless group etareo.
