Abstract

Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a chronic degenerative disease that causes decreased immune status, causing the body prone to opportunistic organisms such as Cryptococcus neoformans. Male 59 years, farmer with a history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension both untreated. He is referred to the Hospital Manuel Ascencio Villarroel from Punata to the emergency room of the Hospital Clínico Viedma from Cochabamba to present altered state of consciousness. Proceed to intern presenting the physical examination: blood pressure of 140/80 mmHg and study cabinet, highlighting: cytochemical positive of cerebrospinal fluid for ink, elevated blood glucose 150 mg/ di and glucose in the urinalysis (+++). Cryptococcal meningitis, type 2 diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension is determined.The treatment was with fluconazole and amphotericin B and insulin.The patient evolved unfavorably, dying of cardiac arrest. Cryptococcus neoformans infection has been widely described and related to patients with HIV, but with the advent of the new era and new lifestyles acquired diabetes mellitus has positioned itself among the major chronic diseases affecting humanity, having resulted in an increased susceptibility of the affected population to Cryptococcus neoformans.
