A review of non-volatile compounds, and their functional properties of Ocinum basilicum L., basil Aromatic plants are well reputed as spices and condiments in addition to their therapeutic properties, being important medicines reported since ancient times in the traditional pharmacopoeia of various origins. The use of aromatic plants in traditional medicine has advanced, thanks to the application of different functions and activities of these as remedies to combat a wide variety of diseases. Aromatic plants offer pleasant aromas, pain relief and disease cure, thus constituting a therapeutic source in the medicinal and herbal field, pharmacy and phytotherapy industries. The objective of this review is to publicize the functional properties of basil, its uses and applications, and benefits for human health and industry.
