The study assessed the extent of contamination of naturally occurring arsenic in surface- and ground-water in the Poopó Lake basin. In this area water from rivers is mainly used for irrigation and in some occasions for consumption while water from wells is mainly used as drinking water, by the other hand, water from thermal springs is used mainly for recreational porpoises and in few occasions also for consumption. Main results show pH values fluctuating in a range between 6.0 to 8.5 and temperature fluctuating between 6 to 20°C with the exception of thermal water samples which vary in a range from 40 to 78°C. Electrical conductivity is relatively high due to the elevated concentrations of dissolved minerals. Physicochemical characterization of the different water bodies shows mainly Na-Cl and Na-Cl-HCO3 water types. Results in all water samples also showed low concentrations of trace elements being in general below the recommended values for drinking water. The World Health Organization recommends arsenic concentrations for drinking water below 10 μg/L, but in the studied area, arsenic occur in a wide range of concentrations, higher than the recommended value. Rivers show concentrations up to 87 μg/L while water from thermal springs show up to 65 μg/L. The major concern is the high arsenic content in water samples collected from drinking water wells which results show arsenic concentrations up to 256 μg/L, which poses the population in a high health risk due to the continuously exposition to the toxic element. + Original Spanish title: Distribución de arsénico geogénico en agua superficial y subterránea en el altiplano central boliviano
