PERALES MIRANDA, Víctor Hugo. Internet surveys: explorations of their biases, quality control, and valiity. Temas Sociales [online]. 2025, n.57, pp.161-187. Epub 30-Nov-2025. ISSN 0040-2915. https://doi.org/10.53287/cykx4476uw45r.
Internet surveys have revolutionized data collection, offering advantages in cost and coverage. However, their self-selection sampling has sparked a methodological debate. This article reviews the evolution of this discussion, from initial skepticism to a nuanced understanding of their purpose and the need for adapted rigor. It explores obstacles like coverage gaps and selection biases, and discusses advances in quality control, ethics, and hybrid methodologies. While not a replacement for probabilistic methods, self-selection surveys are valid for specific contexts, requiring methodological and ethical understanding, plus transparency. Their future involves strategic use in multimodal approaches, demanding researchers skilled in data modeling.
