RAMOS SALAZAR, Sandra R.. Urban-Rural Coca Market in Cochabamba-Bolivia: Reconfiguration with Competition, post Law 906. Temas Sociales [online]. 2025, n.57, pp.11-39. Epub 30-Nov-2025. ISSN 0040-2915. https://doi.org/10.53287/mbxi6819tt90t.
The present article aims to show synthetically the changes that the market (understood as commercialization) of coca in the department of Cochabamba is going through after the promulgation of Law No. 906, General Law of Coca, describing four levels in which this commercialization is observed. It highlights that the process of expansion and diversification of the urban-rural market presents growing competition between coca from La Paz and Chapare, corresponding to the production areas of La Paz and that from Cochabamba. This competition arises from the drive that the organization of coca producers of the Tropic of Cochabamba generates among its producers to improve the quality and presentation of coca from the area, as well as to individually and competitively enter the market with the revaluation of coca from Chapare, stigmatized by its links to drug trafficking and illegality.
