PERALES MIRANDA, Víctor Hugo e SPEDDING PALLET, Alison. What are “failed university students” for? Structural functions of dropping out of university. Temas Sociales [online]. 2024, n.55, pp.77-96. Epub 01-Nov-2024. ISSN 0040-2915. https://doi.org/10.53287/kuwz3039cc66j.
The text considers the phenomenon of “failed students”, those who drop out of university without having obtained a degree, and their relevance in the context of Bolivian higher education. The study”s objective is to examine the trajectories of these students and the impact of the hidden curriculum in their personal and occupational development. The methodology employed is exploratory and qualitative, centred on five case studies, principally from the Sociology Department of the Universidad Mayor de San Andres (UMSA), analyzing both their academic trajectories and competences acquired outside the formal curriculum. The results reveal that, despite not finishing their studies, many students develop practical and social skills that allow them to have a significant impact in their communities and work careers. The conclusions point out the need to reconsider the notion of academic success, suggesting that the hidden curriculum pays a crucial role in the formation of valuable capacities which are not always reflected in obtaining a degree.
