FRIAS NOGALES, Amanda. Bolivian women with hijab: woman gender and islam. Temas Sociales [online]. 2024, n.54, pp.33-68. Epub 01-Maio-2024. ISSN 0040-2915. https://doi.org/10.53287/hoyh8339oj87d.
In Bolivia, religious diversity is a poorly studied topic. During the research work, I applied qualitative methodology, using participant observation between 2015-2020 in the three Muslim communities of the city of La Paz, including 28 in-depth interviews with members of different Muslim communities. The central objective is to examine the participation and position of women within these religious spaces, how they construct and negotiate their identity with their everyday spaces. It is concluded that women in Islamic communities take a leading role that strengthens community practice and life and are the ones who carry the greatest symbolic weight, positioning Islam in the urban public space, allowing its increase, all aided by readings of the doctrine with positive perspectives on the role of women.
