This article constitutes a preview of the doctoral thesis titled “Representations of the Indian in the Bolivian medical discourse during the first half of the 20th century”. It presents the context of the instability of public health in Bolivia in that period, followed by a cartography of medical publications based on the work of Dr. Rolando Costa Ardúz. Finally, we examine some of the representations which we have identified, such as that of the pathologized Indian and the glorified Indian, which are linked to specific diseases, geographical factors, and indigenous culture.
