CASTILLA, César e SANCHEZ, Sami. Migratory Securitization of the Venezuelan Diaspora Before and During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Ecuador and Peru. Temas Sociales [online]. 2023, n.53, pp.53-88. Epub 30-Nov-2023. ISSN 0040-2915. https://doi.org/10.53287/kyhv9351im30u.
Ecuador and Peru were initially willing to welcome Venezuelan migrants, but challenges have arisen due to cultural tensions and the media depiction of foreigner-related criminality. This has led to a double discourse on migration, exacerbated by the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. Venezuelan migrants have risked their lives crossing borders in crisis or seeking refuge in third countries. This research aims to demonstrate the double discourse that entailed the adoption of a security-focused approach in handling the Venezuelan migration crisis by Ecuador and Peru, as well as its consequences for Venezuelans during the Covid-19 pandemic.
