The raising of llamas and alpacas has a significant presence in the native community of Chacaltaya (Bolivia), that has a pastoral tradition, and where the participation of women as the main people responsible for the camelid production process, stands out. The role they play and their significant contribution to territorial development are highlighted, as they are carriers, diffusers and revitalizers of the main economic activity with a presence throughout the community’s territory. The qualitative-ethnographic approach, from a territorial perspective, helps to understand the value and potential of camelid activity. The dynamics of local actors with traditional knowledge in animal breeding has the potential to articulate and unite shepherd families, generating a synergy between internal and external actors and thus capitalizing on their specific knowledge about pastoralism.
