Abstract

ZEBALLOS PAZ, E. Flavio. Academic trajectories and cultural capital in the extension of university studies. Temas Sociales [online]. 2022, n.51, pp.35-59.  Epub Nov 30, 2022. ISSN 0040-2915.  https://doi.org/10.53287/ruww8956ph23h.

This article analyzes the cultural capital with which students entered the Sociology program at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA) in order to see how it could influence the development of their academic trajectories of success or failure in the field of higher education. The theoretical support comes from Pierre Bourdieu through the concept of cultural capital based on the analysis of parentage; the data were obtained through structured interviews. The article highlights that the cultural capital of generation 0 (i.e., older siblings with higher education) is the element that exerts the greatest influence on the completion of university studies.

Keywords : academic path; extension of studies; cultural capital.
