Abstract

OJEDA COPA, Alex. Social studies on digitalization in Bolivia, 2000-2020. Temas Sociales [online]. 2022, n.50, pp.169-196.  Epub May 01, 2022. ISSN 0040-2915.  https://doi.org/10.53287/eyzg3294yj93f.

Based on a bibliographic review of social studies on digital issues in Bolivia, we identify the most frequent themes, the predominant propositions and the gaps in the understanding of the digitalization process of Bolivian society. Around ninety bibliographic items produced in two decades, from 2000 to 2020, were reviewed, mainly published books, articles and government reports. We find that the predominant issues in the sphere of civil society refer to youth, public opinion and collective action; in the sphere of government, electronic government and electoral politics; and concerning the economy, electronic commerce and software industries. However, an understanding of digitization as a technosocial process and the use of digital methods for its study are lacking, and the issues of civil associationism, economic productivity and open government that digitalization promotes are not yet properly addressed.

Keywords : technology and society; digitalization; digital transformation; digital issues; historical change; social change.
