Abstract

CLAROS CHAVARRIA, Javier Andrés. What is behind the concept of 'Head of Household'? A critical analysis of its use. Temas Sociales [online]. 2021, n.48, pp.124-152. ISSN 0040-2915.

The data provided by the National Institute of Statistics of Bolivia reveals that during the last decade 70% of households have a man as their “head”, the remaining 30% is occupied by “female heads” . A priori, these data indicates that the household sphere is a space co-opted by the patriarchal matrix; however, this interpretation is superficial and doesn't show the real problems covered by the use of the concept of “Head of Household”.

Keywords : Head of Household; kind of family; women's rights; patriarchalism; feminism; gender equality.
