Abstract

BARRIENTOS SALINAS, J. Alejandro  and  SILVA ARRATIA, Mariela A.. The state of research on obesity and overweight: a critical and social anthropological review. Temas Sociales [online]. 2020, n.46, pp.130-159. ISSN 0040-2915.

Scientific research on obesity and overweight has been reduced to statistical and biomedical approaches. Despite having incorporated socioeconomic factors as study variables, its limitations prevent visualizing the geopolitical relationships around food systems and the biopolitical relationships between obesity and contemporary malnutrition. The present review constitutes a way to broaden the socio-critical perspective in the approach to obesity and overweight.

Keywords : malnutrition; food colonality; taste; fat studies; fatphobia; socioeconomic factors.
