Abstract This article analyzes the assignment of roles proper to women to sanction (1) men accused and detained for the crime of rape as an act of excessive masculinity and (2) the physical punishment used for their deficit or denial of femininity in the case of women detained for infanticide. It displays the moral character of society inside and outside the prison, focusing on internal morality and its search to restore the socially established order through violent practices that are accepted and even justified by the authorities
