Resumen
TELLEZ-ESPANA, Nicolas. A species in between: contesting identities in contemporary South America. Temas Sociales [online]. 2019, n.44, pp.82-109. ISSN 0040-2915.
Abstract South American identity, generally associated with mestizaje, has been challenged during the height of the pink tide as it did not align with the diversity and complexity of the region. This challenge, pioneered by CAN, MERCOSUR and UNASUR, highlighted a nuanced understanding of identity. Through discourse analysis focused on publications by the aforementioned organizations, I propose a reformed identity based on shared struggle, geography and future aspirations: suramericanismo.
Palabras clave : Identity; suramericanismo; UNASUR; struggle; geography; democracy.
