Abstract

Abstract The article presents the results of a qualitative research about self-protection mechanisms developed by some residents of the city of El Alto in relation to violence and insecurity. The analysis is centered on the characteristics of the so-called community justice and the negative impact it has had on their application in urban contexts. Under this framework, it is considered that the discourse and practice of such management ancestral justice have been deformed and together the growing insecurity and the feeling of state protec-tion constitute precipitating factors for the development of actions attempted lynchings or consummated lynching as a form of collective violence of illegal negligible deterrent and punitive character.
