The current regulation of de facto unions in the Peruvian legal system imposes the regime of community of acquisitions without allowing the free choice of the patrimonial regime, which affects the autonomy and legal security of the cohabitants. This study proposes a legal reform that would allow cohabiting couples to choose between the community of acquisitions and the separation of assets. A quantitative approach was used, applying surveys to analyze citizen perception of the current regulation. The results showed that the imposition of a single property regime violates the dignity and property rights of cohabitants. It is concluded that the reform would strengthen the legal protection of de facto unions, guaranteeing respect for patrimonial autonomy and promoting legal equality in cohabitation relationships.
