Abstract The central and historic area of the city of Puno is facing environmental problems derived from the deterioration of its natural resources, so the local government of Puno is gaining importance due to having green areas in its greater proportion, which has been decreasing in recent years because of the implementation of land use change practices mainly and this led to a serious problem for the historic area, due to the increase in population growth and urban development activities in the lines of a strong imbalance with natural resources. Revista Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación 2019, 17-19: 101-114 In this context, the objective of this research was to determine the economic value given by the population of Puno to the green areas located in the historic center of this city. The methodology used was the contingent valuation method, which allowed to show directly the population's economic value given to urban green areas at issue. Therefore, for the collection of data, it was used surveys applied to people who visited the aforementioned green areas, which were processed in the statistical program STATA. The results show that the people' s willingness to pay for visiting these green areas located in the historic center of the city comes to 3 soles on average. The level of education, the proximity of the green area with its housing and the population' s willingness for the existence of a symbiosis between the natural environment and the built environment are the main influential variables.
