Abstract

Abstract This article presents the results of an intercollegiate research that has the objective of analyzing the contribution of the public regional universities to the development of Valparaíso Region, Chile; from its university-community engagement in the transference or economic, social and cultural aspects. The research has a qualitative approach of descriptive type, applying individual semi-structured interviews to regional academic teams with experience in university-community engagement. Results indicate that public universities of Valparaíso Region significantly contribute to the Regional development from its link with the media function, mainly through the advanced knowledge generated in the classrooms and facilitated to the regional means for its function of teaching and research and its associated mechanisms. As counterpart, the media challenges the universities to generate answers that show a major dynamism and convergence between disciplinary fields, to present regional problems and needs that require integrated answers and permanent redefinition
