Abstract

PEREIRA MORATO, René; LOPEZ FERNANDEZ, Daniel Hernando  and  CAMPUZANO TERRAZAS, Javier. Catholic opinion poll on abortion. Temas Sociales [online]. 2017, n.41, pp.89-112. ISSN 0040-2915.

This article presents the results of an investigation that explores the opinion of Catholics on the subject of abortion. The respondents were young, adults and older adults from the cities of La Paz and Santa Cruz. The topics of inquiry have to do with the opinion about sexual education, sexual and reproductive rights in schools; information on contraceptive methods; access to these methods by adolescents and young people and a long battery of abortion issues, ending with the opinion on what the Church should do to adapt to the twenty-first century. Overall, the results of the survey reveal a very open position of Catholics about sexual and reproductive rights that adolescents and young people should exercise, including information and access to contraceptive methods. This suggests that, despite the current prohibition of the use of modern methods of contraception by the Catholic Church, the Catholic population that participated in the present study shows a favorable opinion on the information and access that young people should have. Therefore, there is a kind of rupture between the principled and dogmatic discourse of the ecclesiastical hierarchy and the concrete and daily practice of the basic Catholics.

Keywords : Abortion; Penalty; Decriminalization; Catholic Opinion.
