ABSTRACT Architectural religious heritage in rural Andean contexts cannot be understood solely as isolated objects, but rather as part of territorial systems where rituality, mobility, community organization, and cultural landscape converge. In the Oruro Altiplano, rural chapels constitute a historical network linked to pre-Hispanic roads, colonial routes, and devotional dynamics. This article propases a territorial analysis of the chapel system of the central Altiplano through georeferenced cartography and a multiscalar approach, interpreting these chapels as nades within a historical and symbolic network. The study aims to identify patterns of distribution, spatial hierarchies, and relationships between architecture, territory, and ritual practices.
ABSTRACT This article analyzes Bolivia’s maritime claim as a long-term cultural and narrative construction, shifting the focus from historical and legal dimensions toward its symbolic character. Through a qualitative, interpretive, and hermeneutic methodology, it examines a corpus of monuments, music, literature, cinema, painting, and architecture linked to the maritime cause. The findings identify a recurring narrative matrix structured around categories such as grievance, sacrifice, heroism, mourning, and promise, which resignify territorial loss as a persistent symbolic presence. The article concludes that the maritime cause functions as a cultural device of memory, cohesion, and national identity, beyond the legal plausibility of the claim. Weaving resistances in contexts of inequality.
ABSTRACT This essay examines the autobiographical memoirs of Domitila Barrios and Hilda Reinaga as spaces for the construction of political identities within contexts of oppression. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Ricoeur, Bakhtin, and Foucault, it analyzes how both authors interweave personal experiences with collective struggles: Domitila through mining trade unionism and resistance to Bolivian dictatorships; Hilda through the preservation and dissemination of Fausto Reinaga's indianismo. Their testimonies, woven from plural voices and strategic silences, transcend the individual to constitute themselves as collective memories of resistance and decolonization.
ABSTRACT This essay delves into poetic thought in Bolivia during the 20th century, focusing on two poets who sustain the so-called “arch of modernity”: Ricardo Jaimes Freyre and Jaime Saenz. Through the critical reading of various writings, it examines how both subvert the literary conventions of their time. Jaimes Freyre establishes the “law of rhythm” and the prosodic period against the mechanics of syllabic counting. And Saenz radicalizes this stance by making the word the creational event of life itself. Both poetics configure the arch of poetic thought of the past century, projecting their vitality into the 21st.
ABSTRACT In the context of Bolivia's Bicentennial, this work analyzes the emotional language in Nataniel Aguirre's Juan de la Rosa (1885). Utilizing R. Micheli's (2014) theoretical model and lexicometric methodology, it explores the emotions told, shown, and situated within the text. The study identifies lexical frequencies and co-occurrences that reveal how the author uses the body and objects to construct the work's sentimental universe. Additionally, it examines the role of loanwords (Quechua, Latin, and French) in shaping the narrative's identity and verisimilitude. From medical geography to genomics: altitude, disease, and the body in the bolivian Andes http://www.scielo.org.bo/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2077-33232026000100135&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt RESUMEN 13.
ABSTRACT 16. This paper examines the persistence of scientific questions concerning the relationship between altitude, disease, and the body in the Andes from the early twentieth century to contemporary biomedicine. It shows how bolivian physicians, particularly Jaime Mendoza, drew on medical geography to interpret the interaction between altitude, environment, disease, and indigenous physiology. Based on these interpretations, the paper establishes a dialogue with recent genomic research on adaptation to hypoxia and susceptibility to disease. It argues that the body in the Andes has persisted as a stable epistemological object within biomedical research, tending to be fetishized and essentialized.
ABSTRACT This article seeks to describe how the Bolivian fictions of the Chaco War highlight post-traumatic emotions in both post-war novels and stories as well as contemporary works. It focuses on the decentralization of war narratives and how they show another narrative about the nation. The return of the demobilized from Chaco to their homes is more than a retrospective anecdote of the armed conflict for the authors, it is a founding episode and a transnational experience that fuels an identity search. Emotions go from being collective diseases in early texts to individual pathologies in more recent literature. The Use of Ontological Metaphor in Architectural Design for the Restructuring and Expansion of the General Cemetery of La Paz http://www.scielo.org.bo/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2077-33232026000100175&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt RESUMEN El presente artículo analiza el diseño para la reestructuración y ampliación del Cementerio General de La Paz, fundado en 1831 y representativo de la simbiosis cultural y patrimonial de Bolivia.
ABSTRACT This article analyzes the design process for the restructuring and expansion of the General Cemetery of La Paz, founded in 1831 and representative of Bolivia’s cultural and patrimonial symbiosis. In response to rising mortality rates and the cemetery’s imminent sanitary and spatial collapse, the project proposes an intervention that integrates technical efficiency with architectural rhetoric. The proposal is structured around two main axes: first, an urban restructuring that conceives the cemetery as a city of the dead, optimizing burial density while recovering degraded public space; second, an underground expansion projected to 2040, compliant with public health regulations and heritage preservation guidelines established by the 1931 Athens Charter. The hypogeal complex adopts the form of a sundial, validated through heliodonometric simulation, in which the gnomon -comprising the chapel and offices- symbolizes the passage of time and human finitude. Swimming Through History: Bolivia’s First Century as Seen by G.R.
ABSTRACT The article examines the historical work of Gabriel René Moreno to identify its argumentative pillars in relation to the construction of the Bolivian nation. It describes how, in his various works, Moreno traces the military and civilian governments of the 1825-1880 period -classified as praetorianism- and their subsequent shift toward a second organizing axis, characterized by formal and partial democratization in the last two decades of the nineteenth century. In this second stage, Moreno shifts his focus from the country’s internal politics to the continental dimension, when Bolivia became part of the first attempts at international organization among Latin American countries. The adventure of the Bolivian book http://www.scielo.org.bo/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2077-33232026000100221&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt RESUMEN 13.
ABSTRACT 18. Publishing a book in Bolivia is often a thankless task, a true adventure. Behind every book lie two stories: the subject of the text itself, and the story hidden within its pages about the trials and tribulations the writer endured before sending it to the press, whether due to material shortages or to the many obstacles faced by intellectual and editorial production. The adventure of the book in Bolivia is a story yet to be told, from its earliest years in colonial times to the present day. Each work has its own history, and each author keeps their own.
