Abstract This study evaluated the relationship between land surface temperature (LST) and vegetation cover (NDVI) across four municipalities in the department of Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, La Guardia, Cotoca, and Porongo) during the 2022 dry season, utilizing LANDSAT 9 imagery filtered for cloud cover (less than 10%) and processed in Google Earth Engine and ArcGIS. The results show that urban and agricultural areas reached the highest temperatures, ranging from 35 to 46°C, particularly in zones with bare soil and scarce vegetation (NDVI between -0.5 and 0.4). In contrast, forested areas recorded temperatures of 17 to 29°C, with NDVI values above 0.6. Santa Cruz de la Sierra exhibited thermal reductions of up to 12°C in agricultural zones and 6°C in urban areas, thanks to patches of urban forest. La Guardia showed contrasts of up to 18°C, Cotoca had differences of 5 to 14°C, and Porongo recorded the highest percentage of healthy vegetation (55%), with temperatures in forested zones up to 12°C lower than in agricultural areas. The NDVI-LST correlation was mostly negative and significant (rho (ρ) = from -0.22 to -0.78; p < 0.001), confirming that vegetation reduces land surface temperature. The study concludes that daytime heat islands do not only occur in dense cities: extensive agricultural areas also generate extreme temperatures.
Abstract A high diversity of plants and birds has been reported for Tunari National Park and its Polylepis forests. To ensure effective conservation in this protected area, this study focuses on describing the different Polylepis forests and the avifauna they harbor as a primary indicator of ecosystem biodiversity. Four Polylepis species were recorded: P. lanata, P. subtusalbida, P. pacensis, and P. pepei, covering 33% of the park's total area at altitudes ranging from 3,100 to 4,400 meters. Each species is found along a portion of the park's broad altitudinal climate gradient. P. lanata and P. pepei grow in very humid to humid areas, while P. pacensis and P. subtusalbida are found in less humid areas. The highest tree density was found in P. pepei and P. subtusalbida, and the greatest tree height in P. lanata and P. subtusalbida. The accompanying plant species form exclusive communities (more than 50%) for each forest type, and ten endemic species are found in the PNT. A total of 177 bird species were recorded in the four Polylepis forests, with the greatest species richness in P. subtusalbida and P. lanata, and the lowest in P. pacensis and P. pepei. Beta diversity analysis showed greater similarity in bird species richness between P. subtusalbida and P. lanata. Ten endemic species have been recorded in the four forest types within the PNT.
Abstract The diet of the bell owl, Tyto furcata, has been extensively studied in South America through the analysis of pellets; however, data for the Bolivian Altiplano are scarce. This study characterized the prey composition and trophic niche breadth of T. furcata in the community of Huancané, Oruro Department, located in the Bolivian puna seca. Fifty pellets containing diagnostic skull remains and a small amount of fragmented material associated with the sample were analyzed. For each prey category, the minimum number of individuals, relative abundance, and percentage contribution to biomass were estimated. The weighted geometric mean weight, niche breadth, range-abundance curves, and category accumulation were also calculated. A total of 108 prey individuals and 17 taxonomic categories were recorded. Small mammals accounted for approximately 93% of the identified individuals, with sigmodontine rodents predominating; birds, marsupials, and lizards were less common. Calomys lepidio and Phyllotis xanthopygus were the most abundant species, while P. xanthopygus and Octodontomys gliroides contributed the most biomass. The weighted geometric mean weight was 33.43 g. Trophic breadth was moderate (B = 7.17; Bst = 0.44; n = 15), indicating intermediate uniformity in the use of prey categories. The accumulation curve and richness estimators suggest that the sampling effort adequately represented the most frequent prey, although rare categories may have been missing. This study constitutes the first characterization of the diet of T. furcata in the Bolivian Altiplano.
