We consider a discrete-time model to describe the evolution of the individual's opinion state. We used the size and average degree of the network to compare how these variables influence polarization. An index is proposed to measure polarization based on individuals who adopted extreme opinions. The emergence of polarization is analyzed for different situations: first, we compare the results when influenceability is considered or not. Then, we analyze the results when influencers are susceptible or not to becoming zealots and intransigents and when the influencers are just intransigents.
Solution of PDEs modeling physical phenomena over heterogeneous media through random walks http://www.scielo.org.bo/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1562-38232024000200011&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en RESUMEN Se desarrolla una metodología numérica para la resolución de EDPs de sistemas heterogéneos basada en técnicas de Monte Carlo mediante paseos aleatorios.
ABSTRACT A numerical methodology is developed for the solution of PDEs in heterogeneous systems, based on Monte Carlo techniques through random walks. The stochastic method is constructed from the discretization of the interfaces between material media using the classical Finite Difference scheme, allowing the direct derivation of the transition probabilities that govern the simulation of random walks of virtual particles. This formulation naturally incorporates discontinuities in the physical properties of the medium without requiring special treatments of interfacial conditions. The methodology is applied to equations associated with electrostatics, heat conduction, and mass diffusion, considering various heterogeneous configurations. In geometrically highly symmetric cases, the numerical results are validated against analytical solutions available in the literature. Furthermore, heterogeneous systems of higher complexity, such as selective membranes and multilayer barriers, for which no analytical solution exists, are investigated, demonstrating that the proposed approach enables the treatment of arbitrary interfacial geometries in a stable, efficient, and easily parallelizable manner.
ABSTRACT In this work, the structural changes experienced by clays during the firing process were investigated. Clay samples were exposed to gradual heating between 100 °C and 400 °C; the structural changes were monitored by X-ray diffraction, taking measurements before and after each heating. The data were qualitatively analyzed using analytical and computational methods: illite, orthoclase, montmorillonite-Ca, anorthite, kaolinite, quartz, cristobalite, albite, vermiculite and riebeckite phases were identified. For the quantitative analysis, the Rietveld method was applied, by which the weight percentage corresponding to each phase was calculated before and after each temperature increase. The variation in the interlaminar distance of Ca-montmorillonite was also determined due to the expansive nature of this clay. A significant decrease in its interlayer spacing was observed with heating, which is attributed to the removal of water (located in the interlayer region, in the pores, and on the surface), a process typical of expansive clays. In comparison, kaolinite clay did not show significant variations in its interlayer spacing with increasing temperature, confirming the structural stability of this clay due to its non-expansive nature.
